Overview of Cut by Cut

These 9 modules are your path to your first multicolor linocut print!

M0 – Let's start

Welcome to the course! After a brief overview of me, my influences and my style, I will introduce you to our course objective. First we will go through all the processes using a simple motif. After that you can continue with the big salad bowl motif or you can start with your own work - since you have acquired the skills after part 1.

  • Intro and about me
  • Influences and style
  • Course objective

M1 – Materials & Products

Learn what products you really need for printing at home. I've provided a complete materials list of "must haves" and "nice to haves" for your inspiration. Some things you'll probably already have at home (for cleaning, for example), others you'll need to purchase.

  • Materials
  • Paper

M2 – The design process

The first step is to choose the design you want to print. To make the course easy to follow, I provide a simple design of an avocado, which is great for practicing. This way we both work on the same image and you can easily follow all the processes.

  • Collect inspiration
  • Keep a sketchbook
  • Analog drawing exercise
  • iPad Pro drawing exercise
  • Sketch transfer

M3 – Carving

In this module you will learn everything you need to know about carving. Which sizes are useful for your starter kit, how to hold and guide the tools properly and also how to sharpen them. We will carve a simple design together and teach you different ways to deal with potential carving mistakes.

  • Carving tools starter kit
  • Correct posture of the tools
  • Carving exercise
  • Sharpening the tools
  • Carving the mini print
  • Repairing carving mistakes

M4 – Printing inks

Excellent printing results are the goal. To achieve this, it is important to understand our relief inks. You will learn which 5 colors you really need to create a huge color palette. Harmonious color schemes are at least as important as the motif itself.

  • Color theory
  • Differences between linoleum printing inks
  • Mixing ink: Pink
  • Mixing ink: Yellow
  • Mixing ink: Green
  • Registration – creating the printing template

M5 – The printing process

Printing with several linoleum blocks comes with some difficulties, first and foremost printing on top of each other without offsets. Over the years I have perfected this process and I will show you exactly how to do it. You can follow the course with or without a printing press, there's a video for both techniques. And I'll show you how to solve typical printing problems.

  • Preparations for printing
  • Laying out the lino block
  • Application of ink
  • Printing with a press
  • Printing by hand
  • Color swatches and drying process
  • Adjustment of printing template
  • Solving printing problems

M6 – Cleaning process

Cleaning all the utensils is part of the job. In this module, I'll show you how to set up a cleaning station with little space and effort. Be careful when cleaning our lino blocks! To enjoy your tools and products for a long time, they have to be stored safely. This too can be done inexpensively and easily.

  • Cleaning setup and general rules
  • Cleaning the printing utensils
  • Storing the blocks and utensils

M7 – The great course design

Together we carve and print the large motif, which brings new challenges due to its size and higher complexity. We go through all the processes one more time, solidifying your knowledge and skills. Or you can continue with your own designs from this point on.

  • Creating the registration template
  • Carving and printing the three layers
  • Cleaning the utensils

M8 – Kids motif bunny

We draw, carve and print this cute bunny. Perfect for 2023, the year of the rabbit. This bonus module is new and shows you a quick way to make this kid-friendly illustration.
The course will always be revised and updated with more content that you will have access to as well.

  • Drawing, carving and printing

M9 – Printing on fabric
